Creative activities and games to do with your kids during the summer break!

24th June, 2020
Summer holiday around the corner, but does it matter? Due to the pandemic our children have been on a holiday break since March! Staying at home doesn't have to be boring at all. I don't know about your child, but 3 year old Christianna who owns more toys than hair and hardly ever plays with any of them and if she does it won't last long. Here is a list of fun and creative games and activities that we have came across on the internet and tested out ourselves. Hours of creative fun without any toys involved.

1. Painting cardboard box or toilet rolls instead of paper
can be fun and different. You and your child can create characters out of the bear toilet rolls by painting facial features and colourful outfits, or turn a cardboard box into a beautiful and colourful castle.

2. Create a sieve hedgehog
by sliding straws or these little fluffy things in the picture whatever they are called, (I spent 30 mins trying to find it online so I can get hold of the name of them without any luck lol, we purchased them in Poundland however I've seen them in most supermarkets in the stationary section) into the holes of the sieve, this activity is very beneficial especially for younger children as it develops their hand control skills.

3. Colour sorting using colourful balls or pompoms
or even toys! I cut out pieces of different colours of paper sheets, to match each colour of the little pompoms, then stack them onto a glass using sellotape  (you can use bowls, boxes or baskets). I placed all pompoms into a separate box and Christianna had to sort them all out by placing each pompom into the correct colour glass.

4. Sponge, spaghetti and cheerios...
Sounds so silly, yet it's one of Christianna's favourites. I've pushed 2 full length pieces of spaghetti, and two shorter ones (broken into halves) into a sponge so they are standing upright and straight (you can use play-dough as the base), I've placed cheerios into a small bowl. My little girl had to hook the cheerios onto the spaghetti. Not only did she enjoy it and ate all the cereal in the end, but this activity will also improve her hand control skills.

5. Number sorting car park
is another fun way of playing a sorting game. On a piece of paper draw a car park and a number from 1-20 on each parking space. Cut out small square paper pieces and write a number from 1-20 on each of them then stick it on top of each of the 20 little car toys using sellotape or blue tuck. If you don't have that many cars you can use anything else such as washing clips, sweets, tealights - anything you can possibly think of. Let your child park each car into the correct parking space - call out the number out each time.

6. Cook or bake together,
and if like myself you never baked anything in your life, and have no skills or clue what so ever, you can purchase ready mixes where all you have to do is add a splash of water and stir it all together. My favourite thing to 'bake' together with my daughter are little pastries coated with beaten egg, sprinkled with sugar and baked for 10mins or so until golden brown. You can purchase ready frozen pastry dough from every supermarket.

7. Boost your immunity by making a home pressed juice together or a smoothie,
for our juice we used 2kg of carrots, 1 parsnip, 4 cooked beetroots, 3 thick slices of ginger, 3 small tomatoes, 2 lemons. Christianna enjoyed it so much that she broke my juicer, and of course she didn't drink the juice - only posed for the picture lol, more for me..

8. Decorate cookies, biscuits or gingerbread,
we've purchased ready kits with 4 ginger breads in it, icing and sprinkles. You will find these in every supermarket. However you can buy all of these separate!

Tips for starting nursery or preschool.

I'm going to kick this post off by being brutally honest with you. Let's jump straight into it. Sending your child to nursery for the first time will probably be the hardest things to cope with. Harder than labour itself I say!! I mean trusting a complete strange group of women to take care of your entire life's biggest treasure, how? It almost seems impossible!

Give yourself and your child time...
Nothing happens overnight. Remember that you were most probably the only person who have looked after your child from the day of their birth up until now... The separation, even if it's just a couple of hours - can be extremely hard and overwhelming, and it's ok to feel weak. One thing you need to remember is that your little not so little bundle of joy will be looked after by a number of experienced and qualified professionals, around other children their age with the most incredible, creative and fun activities and games that will keep them occupied enough to forget you even exist !! Of course it can be difficult at first, but your job is to stay strong and ensure your child knows that this is only for few hours, and that you will be back...

The 'mummy will be back to pick you up soon' rule...
Ensure to dedicate enough time to help your child settle in that your child requires. Start off by slowly disappearing for 5 or 10 mins, each time making sure your little one is aware of the fact that you're leaving the room, whether is to go toilet, make coffee or pop outside to make a phone call and you will be back. I know sneaking out sounds much easier and more convenient but you want to make sure your child trust you and feels comfortable within the environment and the people surrounding them, whilst being aware that you are not around.

Be the first parent at the door !!
Always ensure you are the first one to line up when collecting your kids from nursery. This way they will be called out first out of the room and prevent getting over stressed watching other children leave before.

Have a snack and drink handy for your child...
How extra !! Not really, at nursery they only have limited 'snack time' and food variety. By the end of the day or session, their bellies might just be rumbling. Every child will enjoy their fav snack on the way back from nursery or a drink.

None stop poorly !!
Be prepared for lots of colds in the first months as kids immune system is still very weak and with a little time your bundle of joy will be fighting off any infection like a true soldier. Honestly, nurseries are like germ traps. The kids dribble all over the place, use their hands to wipe their snort, put toys in their mouth and God knows what else. Keep your child hydrated, provide good vitamin intake such as fruit, veggies and lots of fresh air to help strengthen the immune system.

The guilt feeling is real...
It will be almost unbearable at first. None stop flooding the nursery with phone calls to check on your child. And they will encourage you to 'Enjoy some me time'... Girrrl please! I left my child behind in a place she has only been to few times with a bunch of strangers she doesn't really know and you're talking to me about me time? - That's exactly what goes through every mother's head. Give yourself some 'time' before you are ready for the 'me time' whilst your child isn't around.. And eventually - you will love it, just as much as your little treasure will love the nursery journey and new chapter in their life !!

Banana pancakes.

10th June, 2020
With breakfast being the most important meal of the day, often children will try any trick to skip it. Thanks to our family friend, who introduced us to the delicious banana pancakes and always shares the easiest, yet best recipes for kids to try out in our home. Check out this ridiculously easy banana pancakes recipe...

What you'll need:
+ 1 large banana +
+ 2 eggs +
+ half a teaspoon of honey +
+ few drops of vanilla extract +
+ oil for frying, I've used a blend of coconut and sunflower +

How to make them?
Add banana, eggs, vanilla extract and honey to the blender, and turn it on for 15secs. If you do not have a blender you can beat the eggs along with the honey and vanilla extract and mash up banana with fork until it resembles a thick puree. Sprinkle or brush a non-sticky pan with oil and heat up over a medium heat. Pour or spoon a pancake into the pan and fry 1-2 mins on each side. Repeat the process with remaining pancake mix. I've got 6 small pancakes out of 1 banana and 2 eggs. Place them on the plate and serve with jam, chocolate spread, nuts or fruit of your choice.

6 home remedies for sun burn.

1st June, 2020
Summer time is just around the corner! And who doesn't love long hot days fulfilled with sunshine. In summer time we tend to enjoy the sun with the greatest pleasure, kids spend hours in the garden splashing away in puddling pool, building sand castles on the beach or kicking ball at the park! Take a look at our six home remedies to treat or soothe a sunburn.

1. Water
Not to soak in but to drink. Sun exposure causes a lot of water to escape from our body. Burned skin is very sensitive and by ensuring it stays hydrated from the inside, as well as the outside - will bring positive effects on its condition and speed up the healing process.

2. Natural yogurt
Yogurt without sugar (also buttermilk) rubbed onto the irritated areas will bring you so much relief. Not only will it chill the skin, but also moisturise it.

3. Honey
If the burn is not extensive, rub the sensitive area with honey. Honey has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which has a beneficial effect on minor skin irritations.

4. Chamomile and green tea
Brew green tea or/and chamomile, leave to cool, use it to compress the skin to soothe and speed up the healing process.

5. Aloe juice
If you grow healing aloe vera plant, cut off one leaf, cut it in half and squeeze out the "gel" or gently rub the cut side of the leaf across burned skin. Aloe vera soothes irritations and regenerates the skin.

6. Cool compress
Soak a small cloth or towel in cool but not icy water to save yourself the thermal shock and apply to the burned and irritated area. The same applies to ice, which should be wrapped in a clean cloth to avoid a frostbite. A cool shower will work too !!

You should seek medical help if the burn is accompanied by strong skin burning, swelling, blisters, serous exudation or fever.

Our nursery room tour.

1st May, 2020
How about a little tour around our bedroom? It's just our cute little interior full of toys and colours! Nothing too special - but very special to me and my brother. We've been through at least 20 different ball pits within the last year, about 5 different rugs and so on... My mum loves regularly changing it up for us! I absolutely love this place and I'm so very grateful for it. Mum says my room is a reflection of all she wanted as a young child.
